Five Nations Development Projects (FNDPs)

Following an external review of the Small-scale Research Initiatives (SSRIs) in 2014, the Strategy Group decided to pilot a series of funded development projects (FNDPs) that support teachers' work to develop citizenship education or education for active citizenship in their schools.

Following a successful pilot, a further four projects were funded in 2016. Three teachers attended the Dublin 2017 conference to share their experiences and findings through short presentations. Each project lead gave a 'poster' presentation to highlight the aims, outcomes and impact of their work. The posters can be viewed below along with a short description of the project objectives.

Project name: Making sense of democracy: Develop pupils’ understanding of Welsh citizenship.
Project lead: Carly Jones, Ysgol Gyfyn Cymer Rhondda, South Wales
Devolved elections took place in Wales in 2016 but engagement and interest amongst pupils remained low. This project aimed to:
  • Underpin pupils’ knowledge of Wales’ political landscape since devolution and equip them with the knowledge of political parties, significant figures involved and the voting process.
  • Underline the importance of participating in the process as a means of creating a prosperous Wales for their generation and those that follow.

Project name: Bringing Citizenship to Towers School and Sixth Form College
Project lead: Zoe Baker, Towers School and Sixth Form College, Kent, England

This project, originally funded in 2015, had since developed. It has involved:
  • Teaching about democracy through establishing a whole school council.
  • Establishing an elected and active School Council to represent student voice within the school
  • Making clear links between the process students go through at stages in campaigning and elections with national and local elections to reinforce learning outcomes
  • Ensuring this becomes an annual activity in the school and a respected form of gaining stakeholder views

Project name: Exploring the Global Goals
Project lead: Hayley Spollen, Hansfield Education Together Secondary School, Dublin, Ireland
This action project was completed by the 3rd Year CSPE (Civic, Social and Political Education) class as part of their Junior Certificate CSPE programme. It was worth 60% of their overall grade.
The pupils:
  • Explored the 17 Global Goals in class
  • Worked in groups on a specific Goal
  • Created a resource booklet about the Goals
  • Held a Global Goals workshop that younger students attended

The resource is available in hard copy and online on the school’s virtual learning environment. Download the poster presentation for more information
